Banavasi was the capital city of ancient Kadamba dynasty. Madhukeshwara temple here was built in the years as far back as 4 A.D. This temple is situated on the banks of river Varada. Govt. of Karnataka organizes the festival "Kadambotsava" every year in the December month.
Adikavi Pampa, the first poet of Kannada, wrote his epic poems in Banavasi. The town once was the capital of the Kadamba rulers, an ancient royal dynasty of Karnataka. They established themselves there in A.D. 345 and ruled for at least two centuries.
