Kaiga is one of nuclear energy generating station in India. The nuclear power plant has been in operation since March 2000 and is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Kaiga is situated 56 km east of Karwar and 13 km upstream of Kadra Dam on the bank of the Kali river.
In 1986 when the project was taken up there was widespread protests considering the risk of exposure to radiation. Since Kaiga is located in a heavy rainfall area and in a zone prone to earthquakes, these facts fueled the agitation. Kaiga Township is a Housing Colony for the Employees working in Power Plant having around 1500 houses
Kadra Dam is situated 13 kms away from Kaiga. The dam is constructed across river Kalinadi. The dam was primarily built as hydroelectric project for supply of water to turbines of electric power generating station.
